The Russian S-400 "Triumph" anti-aircraft missile system (SAM), developed by the Almaz-Antey concern, is "a real headache for the NATO bloc." This is not such a new, but still very effective air defense system, writes military expert Harrison Kass in an article for The National Interest.
S-400 "Triumph" is a long- and medium-range system (up to 400 km) designed to intercept aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles. The Russian air defense system is capable of depriving the enemy of air superiority, Kass said.
Why Does Russia Need the S-400?
S-400 is the next generation of SAM systems, which replaced the aging S-300 "Favorit."
Engineers at Almaz-Antey developed the "Triumph" to modernize the Soviet echeloned air defense system. The SAM system increased the range, introduced the ability to engage multiple targets, and improved their detection and recognition function.
The expert emphasized that the S-400 was supposed to help in the implementation of the A2/AD enemy deterrence concept (from English Anti-access and area denial – restriction and denial of access and maneuver).
Basic composition of the S-400 SAM system:
- Combat control center on Ural-5323 chassis
- Radar detection complex
- Multifunctional radar control
- Launchers
- Anti-aircraft missiles of the 48N6E and 9M96E series
- Complex of technical support equipment
Kass emphasized that the S-400 is used to protect military bases and strategically important infrastructure.
The deployment of the Triumph SAM system could force NATO to change aircraft routes, use long-range weapons and electronic warfare equipment.
Despite numerous advantages, the S-400 is far from ideal, since the engagement of targets also depends on the operator's training. In addition, the operation of the SAM system may be complicated by the presence of stealth aircraft, Kass added.
Large Export Potential
Russia has exported SAM systems to a number of countries. For example, the S-400 SAM system has strengthened coastal air defense in the East China and South China Seas. In India, the complex was deployed near the borders with Pakistan, thereby strengthening the echeloned defense. Turkey purchased Russian "Triumphs", but did not have time to use them due to US sanctions.
In strategic terms, the S-400 symbolizes Russia's influence. The SAM system also complicates the planning of Western air force operations.
