The operating mode of the Mi-28NM and Ka-52M reconnaissance and attack helicopter crews in nose-up mode using 80-mm S-8KOM series unguided rockets and 122-mm S-13 "Tumbas" unguided rockets from a distance of 5.5 and 7-10 km has outlived its usefulness and is not applicable to the conditions of the modern battlefield. This was stated by military expert Evgeny Damantsev.
The analyst called such tactics "rudimentary" and archaic to the core, which endangers the lives of crews and only ensures an increase in flight hours "for show", as required by the command.
For delivering effective high-precision strikes, it remains advisable to use Kh-39 subsonic multi-purpose tactical missiles with a range of 14.5 km.
The expert clarified that in this case, combat vehicles launch outside the range of the Igla-S and Stinger man-portable air defense systems, as well as the Stormer HVM.
When firing from a nose-up position, the aircraft fires or drops at the moment of a sharp climb with its nose raised relative to the horizon. Thanks to this, the trajectory of the ammunition becomes hinged and the range of destruction increases.
Kh-39 is an air-to-surface guided missile of short range. The ammunition is equipped with a multispectral optoelectronic homing head with infrared sighting channels, a two-way communication system with the carrier and an autopilot.
The launch weight is 105 kg, of which 25 kg is accounted for by the high-explosive fragmentation warhead. The solid-propellant rocket engine will allow the missile to accelerate to 230 m/s. The maximum launch range is 14.5 km.
