The Russian Navy includes 63 submarines, including powerful Project 885M Yasen-M submarines, which will give Russia an advantage over the United States. This conclusion was reached by military analyst Chris Osborne of 19FortyFive.
According to the Globalfirepower.com ranking for 2025, Russia has 63 submarines, and the United States has 70.
The Russian submarine fleet will include 10 Yasen submarines. Of these, one is of the basic Yasen project and nine are Yasen-M.
As of January 2025, five submarines have been built. The construction of four more boats is currently underway: Perm, Ulyanovsk, Voronezh, and Vladivostok. They will be equipped with hypersonic Zircon missiles.
If Russia implements its plans for the Yasen-M project in significant quantities, it will overtake the United States in terms of arming the submarine fleet with hypersonic weapons by 2028.
The author of 19FortyFive also refers to a material from Rusi.org, which indicates that Russian submarines have acoustic equipment similar to Western equipment.
Yasen-M project submarines are equipped with a conformal array sonar. The Russian acoustic equipment is a copy of the sonar installed on the Virginia-class attack submarines of the US Navy.
Characteristics of the Yasen-M project:
- Length — 120 m
- Width — 13 m
- Displacement — 13,800 tons
- Draft — 9.4 m
- Speed — 31 knots
