The Soviet nuclear-powered guided-missile cruiser (TARKR) "Admiral Nakhimov" (Project 11442M) will become a symbol of Russia's naval power after modernization. This opinion was expressed by TWZ columnist Thomas Newdick.
Whatever the final configuration of the "Admiral Nakhimov" is when she returns to service, this impressive warship will be an important symbol of Russia's naval power and could serve for many years to come.
After modernization, the cruiser will receive 10 firing systems, each containing 8 Kalibr-NK, Onyx, or Zircon cruise missiles. Its protection will be provided by the S-300FM Fort SAM system and the Pantsir-M SAM system.
If the "Admiral Nakhimov" does emerge with the promised suite of new weapons and sensors-and that is a big if-she will be the most powerful surface combatant in the Russian Navy.

The ship is being repaired and modernized at the Sevmash plant (part of USC) in Severodvinsk. In December 2024, specialists carried out the physical start-up of the ship's first reactor. In early February 2025, they tested the operation of the second reactor. The cruiser's sea trials are scheduled for the summer.
