The Serbian Ministry of Defense is modernizing the Armed Forces by purchasing equipment and weapons from various countries around the world, including Russia, the United States, France, China, and now Israel. This is according to the Eurasian Times.
According to the publication, Serbia has signed a major contract with the Israeli company Elbit Systems for the purchase of the Elbit PULS modular rocket artillery system. At the same time, like any Balkan country, Serbia has air defense systems of Soviet and Russian production in service.
The Serbian Air Force and Air Defense units operate:
- MiG-29 fighters
- An-26 military transport aircraft
- Mi-35, Mi-17, Mi-8 helicopters
- Short-range S-125 "Neva" SAM system (export name of the "Pechora" complex)
- 2K12 "Kub" SAM system
- 9K35 "Strela-10" SAM system
- 9K31 "Strela-1" SAM system
- Pantsir SAM/SPAAG
The Serbian Ground Forces operate many Russian armored and artillery systems. For example, the 2S1 Gvozdika has served the Serbian army for a long time. In addition, the Serbian army uses modernized versions of the T-72 main battle tank (MBT).
As the author of the Eurasian Times emphasizes, Serbia is the only European country in service with Chinese drones and air defense systems.
In 2019, the Serbian Ministry of Defense purchased the Chinese FK-3 air defense system. It is comparable in parameters to the Russian S-300 Favorit. China fulfilled the contract in 2022.
