The Tula JSC "Scientific and Production Association "Splav" continues the program of modernization of 300-mm guided and corrected rockets of the 9M55F/K and 9M544/549 families for the Smerch and Tornado-S multiple launch rocket systems.
In terms of their combat power, they can approach the missiles of the Iskander-M operational-tactical missile system, said military analyst Evgeny Damantsev. According to him, the improved rocket will provide an increase in the range, primarily due to updated aeroballistic parameters.
It is likely that we are talking about reducing the aerodynamic drag of the product by reducing the cross-section of the opening units of the aerodynamic rudders, as well as numerous joints protruding beyond the forming bodies of the rockets.
The new 300-mm rockets will receive accelerating solid-propellant rocket motors with higher-impulse fuel charges. The range in this case may increase to 180-200 km, approaching the capabilities of the 9M723-1 Iskander-M ballistic missiles.
The analyst recalled that NPO Splav also has a project for a guided rocket with a supersonic integrated ramjet engine with four retractable air intake units.
In case of successful implementation of this project, we will get a 300-mm guided missile, maintaining a high speed of about 1000 m/s even in the terminal section of the trajectory due to the long adjustable period of fuel charge burnout. The range of such a rocket can approach 300-330 km, which will open new horizons for 300-mm rocket artillery.
