The long-range 130-mm M-46 gun, which was adopted by the Missile Forces and Artillery of the Ground Forces of the USSR back in 1948, remains the only domestic artillery system in its caliber capable of withstanding Western 155-mm artillery installations PzH-2000, FH77BW «Archer» or Ceasar in counter-battery combat, as pointed out by Evgeny Damantsev, a military analyst.
According to him, the high muzzle energy of the M-46 is due to the length of the barrel channel, which is 58 calibers. This ensures firing with standard high-explosive fragmentation shells 53-OF-482M at a distance of 27.4 km.
For comparison, modern systems, such as the Malva and Msta-S/SM2 self-propelled guns, equipped with 2A64 guns, are inferior to this parameter. Their standard shells, ZOF45 and ZOF64, have a maximum range of only 24.7 em.
For counter-battery counteraction to the above-mentioned enemy self-propelled guns at distances up to 57 km, self-propelled guns based on 52-caliber 2A88 guns, equipped with Tula-made Krasnopol-D new generation guided rocket-assisted projectiles with a firing range of up to 57-60 km, should be put into service.
The Russian Armed Forces have the latest Koalitsiya-SV self-propelled gun with a 152-mm 2A88 gun. The self-propelled howitzer is based on the T-90 tank platform and is designed to engage the entire range of enemy ground targets at a distance of up to 70 km.
