The formation of the first regiment with the new S-500 «Prometheus» SAM system for strategic anti-missile defense (AMD) is being completed in Russia, the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces stated. The number of launchers in one regiment was not specified. This is according to Military Watch Magazine.
One regiment of S-400 SAM systems has 16 launchers for surface-to-air missiles, while the number of launchers in an S-500 regiment is unknown.
The S-500 launcher is designed for two missiles that hit targets at a distance of up to 600 kilometers.
The range of the S-400 is 400 km, while that of the American THAAD and Patriot systems competing with the Russian SAM systems is 200 km. The S-500 was developed not as a replacement for the existing system, but rather as a new level in Russia's air defense system. It will occupy a niche between the S-300 and S-400 (tactical level) and the A-235 Nudol strategic level system.
According to Military Watch Magazine, Russian military personnel had previously deployed an S-500 battalion. Western media wrote that the complex was used in Kerch and the Arctic.
The S-500 hits a target moving at high speed and high altitude. It is believed that the SAM system can intercept satellites and intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Such technical capabilities make the S-500 "completely unique in the world," the journalists at Military Watch Magazine concluded.
About the S-500 SAM System
The S-500 «Prometheus» was developed by engineers at the Almaz-Antey Air and Space Defence Corporation as a new generation of SAM systems. The complex is delivered to the launch site by military transport aircraft.
The S-500 uses 40N6 missiles (to engage aerodynamic targets) and 77N6 missiles (to engage ballistic missiles in the exoatmospheric section and in near space). The complex receives data about the approach of a target from a missile attack warning station (SPRN).
