A captured American M1A1 Abrams tank was delivered to Uralvagonzavod, which is considered the main manufacturer of armored vehicles in Russia. The company's engineers will inspect the combat vehicle. This is reported by Bulgarian Military.
Information about the arrival of a Western tank in Nizhny Tagil appeared in the Telegram channel "Military Observer". In the published video, the M1A1 Abrams was covered with tarpaulin, so it is difficult to assess the condition of the tank, writes Bulgarian Military.
Reverse engineering (studying a sample of military equipment to understand the principle of its operation) is not a new concept, but rather a standard procedure. So what can the Russians learn from examining the M1A1 Abrams? The main goal is to study its technical characteristics and understand which systems make the American tank one of the most formidable armored vehicles in the world.
Journalists of the Western publication did not rule out that the engineers of Uralvagonzavod would be interested in composite armor. The M1A1 Abrams has multi-layered armor consisting of metal, ceramics and depleted uranium.
Thus, the Russians could obtain important information to improve the armor of their tanks or develop a technology to counter anti-tank guided missiles.
It is possible that engineers will be interested in the tank's fire control system. The M1A1 Abrams received advanced guidance and fire control systems (including thermal imagers, laser rangefinders and ballistic computers), which provide high shooting accuracy.
The mobility of the M1A1 Abrams is explained by its powerful gas turbine engine. The unit provides speed and maneuverability of the tank even on rough terrain. After studying its design, the Russians could improve the engine of their own armored vehicles.
In fact, Uralvagonzavod can use M1A1 Abrams technologies to improve the entire line of armored vehicles, the Bulgarian Military journalists summarized.
