Data centers can be placed in abandoned coal mines to save on long-term investments and operational costs for cooling systems. This proposal was put forward by Ilya Seredyuk, Governor of Kemerovo Oblast, at the "Russian Energy Week" in Moscow.

The head of Kuzbass reminded that mining companies, after completing work in a coal mine, must spend significant resources on its reclamation.
So, a monolithic multi-story building should simply be lowered there, not up, but down. And this will result in CAPEX and OPEX savings on the cooling system.
In addition, placing computing infrastructure in quarries will increase the security of facilities, he noted.
To combine energy, data centers (DPCs), artificial intelligence, and industrial production, it is necessary to switch to coal combustion using supercritical steam parameters (SC) technology, Seredyuk added.
Such a system, with the volume of coal we propose to process, will make it possible to create 40 thousand alternative jobs.
This refers to a method of operating coal-fired thermal power plants where water is heated to a state above the critical point (pressure above 22.1 MPa or 221 bar, and temperature above +374 °C). The key advantages of this technology are high economic efficiency and reduced harmful emissions into the environment.
