Russia and China are working on creating the HUNT neutrino telescope on Lake Baikal. The installation, covering an area of about 30 square kilometers, will allow for faster detection of high-energy neutrino sources and the study of processes in distant galaxies, stated MSU Rector Viktor Sadovnichy.

According to Sadovnichy, high-energy neutrino astrophysics is still in its early stages, and further progress will require increasing the scale of observations. MSU is participating in the Russian-Chinese project for the new telescope.

The new telescope will allow for the detection of point sources of high-energy neutrinos in a record short time.

Neutrinos barely interact with matter, so they can bring information from regions of the Universe inaccessible to ordinary astronomical observations.

Scientists expect to use HUNT to find point sources of such particles, including blazars, active galactic nuclei, and regions near black holes.
