Fraudsters have started distributing fake image search applications that actually install malware on smartphones. After this, the attackers try to gain access to the device and the victim's mobile bank, the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs reported.

The deception scheme begins with installing an application from an unknown source. Along with the program, malware is downloaded to the phone, which asks to restart the device. After turning on the smartphone, the user sees a message allegedly from the bank about detected viral activity.

To "eliminate the problem," the application offers to enter a code word and grant access to the device. If a person fulfills these requirements, fraudsters gain the ability to control the smartphone and access the mobile bank.

After this, the attackers transfer money from the victim's accounts to controlled details. At the same time, they can also obtain other personal data stored on the device.

The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs recommends not installing programs from unknown sources and not granting third-party applications remote access to your smartphone. Unexpected requests to enter code words, bank details, or permissions on behalf of a financial organization should be particularly alarming.
