OKBM Afrikantov manufactured and supplied the main primary circuit circulation pumps for the MBIR multipurpose research reactor. The equipment will ensure coolant circulation through the core and will become one of the key systems of the reactor facility.
The main feature of the project is that MBIR uses liquid sodium as a coolant. Therefore, the pumping equipment is subject to increased requirements for temperature conditions, resistance to the working medium, and tightness.
When creating the equipment, specialists used and adapted solutions that were previously applied to reactors with sodium coolant BOR-60, BN-600, and BN-800.
Successful tests confirmed that we managed to comply with all requirements and ensure the necessary level of reliability and safety. This is an important step for the MBIR reactor facility.
The installation of the pumps at the NIIAR site in Dimitrovgrad is planned by the end of 2026.
MBIR is being created as a large research platform for testing nuclear fuel, new coolants, and materials that can be used in IV generation energy.
