Kalashnikov assault rifles (AK) are capable of firing after 50 years in salt water. This was stated by Georgy Gubich, a specialist at the Kalashnikov Concern, on the sidelines of the international exhibition Africa Aerospace and Defence 2026 in Pretoria, South Africa.

According to him, the AK is one of the most reliable small arms in the world. In African countries that cooperated with the USSR, this assault rifle was very popular.
Even now, on the continent, you can find samples that are retrieved after 50 years in salt water — they are rotten, rusty, but still capable of firing. The reliability is excellent.

Kalashnikov Concern for the first time presented shortened AK-15K and AK-19K assault rifles at the Rosoboronexport stand in South Africa. In addition, exhibition visitors can inspect samples of AK-203, AK-204, SVCh, PPK-20, and the Lebedev pistol line.
