Gunsmiths from all over the world are striving to make their products compact, and this is the main trend. This opinion was expressed by Georgy Gubich, a specialist at Kalashnikov Concern, on the sidelines of the international exhibition Africa Aerospace and Defence 2026, which is taking place in Pretoria.

In modern realities, there is a tendency for weapon dimensions to decrease.

According to him, previously in the Russian army and in the armed forces of other countries, the focus was on weapons with long barrels — 16 inches and more. But now compactness is becoming the main criterion.

Therefore, Kalashnikov developed popular versions of assault rifles with shortened barrels. And this is not a marketing ploy, but a necessity due to new combat conditions, Gubich explained.

Everyone in the world is switching to more compact versions, because reality demands it, it's more convenient and effective.
