The Russian fishing fleet is simultaneously aging and slowing down its renewal. The average age of vessels has reached 32.7 years, reported Alexey Timoshchuk, head of the technical supervision department in industry and shipbuilding at the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping.
More than 20% of the fleet is already over 40 years old. The pace of new fishing vessel construction has halved in the last year. While 14 fishing vessels were built in 2024, only 7 were built in the first nine months of 2025.
Currently, the fishing fleet of the Russian Federation, according to the data from the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping, consists of 965 vessels.
Over 10 years, the Russian fishing fleet has been replenished with 85 vessels. 60 of them were built in Russia, and another 25 abroad.
Acting Director of the Verkhne-Volzhsky branch of RKO, Alexey Solovyov, also pointed out the actual absence of engines with a power of 500 to 1500 kW in Russia. Shipyards have to turn to foreign suppliers, which is not always available.
In addition, the construction of new vessels in Russia costs 3 times more than abroad due to lagging automation and robotization.
