Chemists from the laboratory of Severskaya TPP in Tomsk Oblast (a branch of Rosatom Infrastructure Solutions) have developed a technology for obtaining 100% iron-containing concentrate from ash. A magnetic fraction of commercial quality was produced at a modular coal combustion waste processing plant, the company's press service reported.

The possibility of extracting a magnetic fraction from ash has been known for a long time. However, the purity of the resulting product was 92%, the rest being impurities. At the same time, additional purification made the raw material more expensive.

Rosatom scientists have fine-tuned the technological regime of hydrodynamic separation and magnetic separation. Thanks to this, the purity of the iron-containing concentrate has been increased to 100%.

The regime developed at the station allows for immediate production of a pure commercial concentrate, comparable in its characteristics to natural iron ore.

The new technology can be scaled to other regions, including Siberia, the Urals, and the Far East. The modular plant is easy to deliver to ash dumps of coal-fired TPPs.

With its help, fresh ash and accumulated waste from landfills can be processed. The resulting concentrate will be in demand in metallurgy and the production of building materials.
