Machine vision technologies, which allow electronic devices to receive, process, and analyze visual data, are already used in trade. Based on this, a robot cashier can be developed. This opinion was expressed by Roman Chekushov, Deputy Head of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade.
According to Chekushov, machine vision has already been implemented in "smart" scales in supermarkets. Electronic devices can determine what product the customer is weighing and its cost.
There is a technology that allows individual items to be moved between store shelves. Perhaps this will allow for a robot cashier in the future.
These are still plans for the future, the Deputy Minister added.
In his opinion, robotization should solve applied problems — both for the retailer and for the buyer, including making the trading process cheaper and more efficient.
Despite the growth of automation in the commercial sector, cash registers staffed by people will remain. Some customers need help when purchasing goods, and others are used to traditional service, Chekushov concluded.
