Rosatom intends to build its own shipyard near Murmansk for completing floating nuclear power units (FNPU). The project cost is estimated at several tens of billions of rubles, said Alexey Likhachev, CEO of the state corporation, in an interview with "Expert" magazine.

The reason is the limited capabilities of Baltiysky Zavod, which builds Project 22220 icebreakers and the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant. Its territory is constrained by the Blagoveshchensky Bridge, so the plant will not be able to accept orders for dozens of floating power units that will be required in the coming years. The new site will be located next to Atomflot and Murmansk's port infrastructure, with unrestricted access to the ocean.

Currently, almost the entire production program of Baltiysky Zavod consists of Rosatom's orders, but a separate shipyard is needed for the serial production of FNPUs. Likhachev emphasized that for the state corporation, deadlines and quality are important, not ownership of the site for the sake of ownership. The new shipyard will ensure a guaranteed production result for Arctic projects.
