A light aircraft, a Cessna 172, took off on Saturday from the airfield in Kalocsa and headed towards Paks, where Hungary's only operational nuclear power plant is located. The military detected the aircraft on radar and scrambled two JAS 39 Gripen fighters to intercept it.

The aircraft did not reach the plant. The Cessna made an emergency landing near the settlement of Gerény. A young man born in 2002 was at the controls. Hungarian law enforcement is investigating the reasons for the hijacking and why the aircraft headed specifically for Paks.

Recall that the first four power units of the Paks plant were built with the help of the Soviet Union from 1970 to 1980.

The Soviet institute "Teploelektroproekt" developed the technical design of the plant. VVER-440 reactors, turbines, and generators were built at the largest enterprises of the USSR, such as "Izhorskiye Zavody" and "Leningradsky Metallichesky Zavod".

Russia is also currently participating in the construction of the Paks-2 plant in Hungary. More than 18 thousand m³ of concrete have been laid on the foundation of power unit No. 5, and the excavation of the "nuclear island" pit is underway at the site of the sixth unit.
