The development of the first Russian superconducting cyclotron for proton beam therapy is planned to be completed in 2027, announced Sergey Hertzog, CEO of JSC "NIIEFA". Commissioning will begin at the same time.

The MSC-230 cyclotron accelerates protons to high energies – up to half or two-thirds the speed of light – using magnetic and electric fields. This allows for precise destruction of cancerous tumors, minimizing damage to healthy tissues.
In 2026, the magnetic core was manufactured – a key element of the accelerator weighing 127 tons and with a diameter of almost 4 meters. Currently, the accelerating system, superconducting coils, and other components are being created. The assembly precision of the magnetic core was 0.05 mm.
Development began in 2022. The project is being implemented by NIIEFA and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna. The accelerator will allow the use of the advanced method of proton flash therapy – delivering an ultra-high dose of radiation to the tumor in fractions of a second.
In July 2026, Rosatom received a certificate for another medical cyclotron – SS-18/9 for the production of radiopharmaceuticals, which has already begun to be supplied to hospitals.
