Two RITM-200 nuclear reactors have been installed on the nuclear icebreaker "Leningrad," which is currently under construction, according to the Baltic Shipyard (part of USC). Both power units have taken their designated places, and the installation of reactors and auxiliary equipment has begun.

The reactor plants will form the core of the icebreaker's energy system. Each reactor weighs over 147 tons, is 7.3 meters high, and 3.3 meters in diameter. The thermal power of one unit is 175 MW. The designated service life of the RITM-200 is 40 years, with fuel reloading every 7 years.

The RITM-200 are pressurized water reactors with a two-circuit integral layout: steam generators are built directly into the core vessel, which reduces the risk of coolant leaks, decreases dimensions, and simplifies installation. The equipment was manufactured by Rosatom's enterprise "ZiO-Podolsk," and the reactors were named "Iskra" and "Grom" in honor of the 1944 operations to break the Siege of Leningrad.

The design allowed for Project 22220 icebreakers to be dual-draft: by taking on and discharging water ballast, they can operate in deep Arctic seas and enter the mouths of Siberian rivers. "Leningrad" will be the sixth vessel of Project 22220. The icebreaker's keel was laid on January 26, 2024, with the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The main characteristics of the project vessels are: length 173.3 meters, width 34 meters, shaft power 60 MW, displacement 33.54 thousand tons, crew 54 people.
