Specialists of Russian Railways (OAO "RZD") are exploring the possibility of launching unmanned trains with a driver in the cabin on new routes. This was reported by the press service of the state carrier.

Currently, the company is working on replicating the UA 3 technology [third level of automation — editor's note www1.ru] on other routes.
Currently, an ES2G "Lastochka" train operates on the Moscow Central Circle (MCC) using UA 3 technology. The train has been carrying passengers since 2024. The driver is in the cabin and controls the movement, opens/closes doors.

The highest, fourth level of automation is UA 4. Specialists of NIIAS (Research and Design Institute of JSC "RZD") are already testing technologies of this level. It is assumed that there will be no driver in the train cabin. In case of emergency situations, they will be able to connect to the system from the dispatch center.
The Russian Ministry of Transport plans to start testing unmanned trams without a driver in the cabin in 2027. A similar experiment is planned to be launched for unmanned buses in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Tatarstan, and a number of other regions.
