"All trains will be unmanned": Driverless rail transport will become the standard in the near future

Unmanned locomotives will operate not only in Moscow, but also in other directions

Driverless rail traffic will become the standard in megacities in the near future. This was announced by Oleg Belozerov, General Director of Russian Railways (RZD).

Trains without a driver will run not only in Moscow and the Moscow region, but also in other directions.

All trains will definitely be unmanned, and the driver will move from the traditional format to the management format, I don’t know, the flight engineer of this system.

In August 2025, the first Lastochka electric train with the third level of automation was launched on the Moscow Central Circle (MCC). From 2026 to 2029, it is planned to introduce 139 such unmanned trains.

At this stage, the driver remains in the cab, monitors the movement and can intervene in the control at any time. Fully unmanned trains will appear later - after 2029.
