The Transport Committee of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg requested 14.6 billion rubles for the purchase of 84 new trams in 2027. Converted per carriage, this amounts to about 174 million rubles, according to the Telegram channel "Avtovoz".
The head of the department, Denis Minkin, explained that a modern three-section tram costs about 200 million rubles, as it is a complex technical device. In terms of control systems and comfort, it is compared to a spacecraft or a submarine.
As the channel notes, St. Petersburg's bus fleet has already been completely updated — the average service life of vehicles is four years. The situation with trolleybuses is also favorable: the share of modern vehicles exceeds the target of 85% set for 2030. With trams, the situation is worse: the share of new carriages in the city is less than 80%.
According to the channel, an average bus today costs the customer 11–19 million rubles, a trolleybus — 28–38 million rubles, an electric bus with a lifetime maintenance contract — 30–72 million rubles. At the same time, the cost of infrastructure for trolleybuses and trams is a separate large expense item.
Modern Trams for St. Petersburg
We have already discussed in detail the new trams arriving in St. Petersburg. In 2023, the Uraltransmash plant began assembling retro trams of the "Dostoevsky" and "Dovlatov" series — three- and two-section low-floor carriages, inspired by the appearance of the Soviet LM-57, but equipped with modern electronics. Later, Rostec completed the delivery of "Dovlatovs" for St. Petersburg parks with steep historical turns, and the "Lvyonok" tram with an active driver assistance system based on AI has already entered city routes. It is the rich electronics — safety systems, driver condition monitoring, climate control, interactive screens — that largely explains the high cost of a modern carriage, as mentioned by the Transport Committee of the Legislative Assembly.
