The first batch of new three-section trams, model 71-639 "Kastor", manufactured by the Ust-Katav Wagon-Building Plant (UKVZ, part of Roscosmos, located in the Chelyabinsk region), has been delivered to Yekaterinburg. In total, the city will receive 50 such vehicles under the contract, with the remaining 40 arriving by the end of the year.
Each tram accommodates up to 200 passengers, has a low floor level, and is equipped with climate control, LED lighting, and a cashless payment system. Voice announcements are provided for the visually impaired, and wheelchair spaces are available for people with limited mobility.
Safety is controlled by automation: if the driver starts talking on the phone while driving, a voice warning will be triggered, and the dispatcher will receive a notification of the violation. The trams are adapted to the Ural climate and designed to operate in any weather.
The first trams have already been assigned to routes №6 and №13, and another batch will be sent for testing on route №16. After the delivery of all 50 units, the "Kastors" will operate on routes №8, №14, and №15. During the auction for the supply, the starting price was reduced by more than 2.3 billion rubles, which makes it possible to either purchase additional trams or reduce lease payments.
