The Russian dry cargo ship ALEXANDER, with an unusual geometric camouflage, was spotted in the Turkish port of Haydarpaşa in Istanbul. The contrasting pattern on the ship's hull visually breaks up its silhouette and makes it noticeably different from ordinary civilian dry cargo ships.

Dazzle camouflage is designed to completely conceal a ship. By using stripes, angles, and various shapes, it alters the familiar forms of the hull, making it difficult to visually determine its outlines and position.

Such a paint scheme is known from warships and was used as early as the last century. However, in the case of ALEXANDER, its appearance on a civilian dry cargo ship looks unusual. Presumably, this painting method may now be considered as one of the options for reducing the effectiveness of visual detection and recognition of the vessel by drones.

In particular, the contrasting pattern can potentially make it difficult for computer vision algorithms to determine the boundaries and shape of an object against the background of water.

Dry cargo ship ALEXANDER is a river-sea type vessel of project 17605, built in 2013 in Perm at the facilities of OOO "Verkhnekamskaya Stroitelnaya Kompaniya". The vessel was built by order of the shipping company "Anship".
