The operator "MegaFon" conducted tests of a private 5G network (Private 5G) in its own telecommunications equipment laboratory. During the work, specialists checked the possibility of transitioning the existing LTE infrastructure to the new communication standard using Russian base stations.
Engineers deployed core and transport networks, configured traffic routing, resource allocation, and component redundancy. They separately checked the joint operation of domestic stations with foreign-made base stations. The tests confirmed the possibility of combining heterogeneous equipment in one network without interrupting communication.
Specialists also assessed the compatibility of the 5G infrastructure with telemetry systems, remote monitoring, transport and logistics management. Additional tests concerned data transfer speed, signal delay, and network stability under increased load. To protect the infrastructure, a set of cybersecurity tools was applied, designed, among other things, to meet the requirements for critical information infrastructure.
MegaFon reported that it will continue to test Russian telecom equipment in laboratory conditions before using it in operational networks. It is expected that this will simplify the phased modernization of LTE infrastructure and allow the continued operation of already used corporate systems.
What is Private 5G
A private 5G network is a dedicated wireless infrastructure deployed for the benefit of a specific enterprise or facility. Unlike public networks, it provides guaranteed quality of service parameters: ultra-low latency, isolated traffic, and an increased level of cybersecurity.
Typical applications include mining, logistics, automated manufacturing, transport management, and critical infrastructure facilities.
