Russian tanks have faced a threat against which armor alone is not enough. FPV drones have become one of the main means of destroying heavy equipment, so designers are bringing active protection systems back on the agenda. One of them is "Arena-M", which is currently being tested on Russian tanks.
"Arena-M" was developed by specialists from the Kolomna KBM. Instead of a single large block on the turret, several small-sized antennas are used around the perimeter. This allows for a circular view of the space around the vehicle.
At the same time, "Arena-M" does not cancel other protection means. The system still has limitations for some types of ammunition and threats, including attacks from the upper hemisphere. In addition, when the APS is operating, it is dangerous to be directly next to the tank.
Military analyst Evgeny Damantsev clarified that the maximum speed of targets hit by "Arena-M" is up to 1.2 km/s. However, to destroy UAVs, the radar system's viewing angle needs to be increased from 20 to 80 degrees.
New production T-90M "Proryv" tanks began to be built at Uralvagonzavod immediately with the "Arena-M" kit. The combat vehicle's turret with the system was seen in a photo report on the trip of the Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of Russia in the Ural Federal District, Artem Zhoga.
