Finnish company Fingrid has warned that from 2027, it will stop maintaining power line poles that carry some communication lines to Russia. However, ordinary users are unlikely to notice any changes, according to information security specialist Sergey Trukhachev.

Data does not travel along a single route. The Internet is a branched network, so if one section is disconnected, the load automatically shifts to other channels. This resilience was originally built into its architecture.

Significant consequences are only possible for large scientific and industrial companies that require huge volumes of traffic and minimal delay. For them, a new route might be longer or more expensive.

According to the expert, it is practically impossible to completely cut Russia off from the global network: this would require simultaneously blocking many independent lines and coordinating the actions of a large number of operators.

Since 2022, Russia has stopped supplying electricity to Finland. Maintaining the poles has become unprofitable, and Russian operators may lose some main channels to Europe. Rosseti stated that the 400 kV power transmission line section PS Vyborgskaya – PS Yullikkälä / PS Kymi, owned by the company, has been operating in a limited mode since 2022. Power transmission and technological data transfer through it are not carried out. This infrastructure will be used for the internal needs of the Russian electric power industry, the company reported. Rosseti representatives also noted that they had not received information about the condition and operation of the Finnish section of the line.
