The priority direction for the development of non-nuclear submarines of the Russian Navy will be the creation of an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system. Thanks to it, submarines will be able to remain underwater without surfacing, explained Fleet Commander Admiral Alexander Moiseev.
Such submarines will be able to operate covertly for longer periods, without surfacing for the operation of conventional power plants.
The priority direction of development is the creation of non-nuclear submarines with an air-independent propulsion system. Their enhanced ability to remain submerged for a long time is a requirement of modernity.
The development of AIP is already at the stage of experimental design work. Andrey Baranov, Deputy General Director of Rubin Central Design Bureau, noted that full-scale tests of the system are planned for this year. If the tests are successful, the experimental design work is expected to be completed by 2026–2027.
Earlier, designer Nikolay Kirillov patented a project for a large non-nuclear submarine with an auxiliary low-power nuclear propulsion system. He had already taken into account the problem of the need for submarines to surface.
