The modernization of the nuclear-powered missile cruiser "Admiral Nakhimov" cost approximately $5 billion, making the project one of the most expensive combat ship upgrades in the world. After years of reconstruction, Russia has recommissioned the largest surface ship with new missile armament, including "Zircon" hypersonic missiles, according to analysts from Defence Security Asia.

The modernization of the Project 1144.2 "Orlan" cruiser was carried out over many years. Initially, it was about repairing and restoring the ship, but the program gradually turned into a deep overhaul with the replacement of a significant part of the electronics, control systems, armament, and radio equipment.

The main result of the upgrade was the appearance of universal launch systems that allow the use of modern missiles of various types. The cruiser gained the ability to use "Zircon" hypersonic anti-ship missiles, "Onyx" supersonic systems, and "Kalibr" family cruise missiles.

In addition to strike weapons, the ship received new target detection systems, electronic warfare equipment, and updated air defense.

After modernization, "Admiral Nakhimov" retained its nuclear power plant, which allows it to have an almost unlimited cruising range.

The cruiser is one of the largest non-aircraft carrier combat ships. Its full displacement is about 28 thousand tons, and the hull length exceeds 250 meters. Thanks to the upgrade, the ship should become one of the most powerful missile platforms of the Russian fleet.
