Skolkovo developers have patented an external rotor engine for drones, in which engine cooling is organized without complex external systems. The new design is intended to drive the UAV's propeller.
The main feature of the solution is a lightweight disk with a system of profiled radial channels installed on the rotor.
During engine rotation, it acts as an integrated centrifugal fan – directing airflow into the housing, into the annular gap between the rotor and stator, and directly to the stator windings, which heat up most under load.
At the same time, the cooling intensity automatically increases with engine speed. The higher the rotor speed, the more air passes through the channels, reducing the temperature of the most heated elements. This should reduce the risk of stator winding overheating and extend bearing life.
