A new titanium alloy for medical implants has been developed in Russia, which can make domestic products stronger and more reliable. The development was created by the VSMPO-Avisma Corporation as part of an import substitution program, and after obtaining a Russian patent, medical device manufacturers will be able to use the new technology for free and without restrictions.

The main difference of the new development is that it combines the properties of two alloys that are currently used in implantology. One provides high strength, while the other provides ductility and resistance to cracking. Previously, manufacturers had to choose between these qualities, but now they are combined in one material.

The corporation explained that the new VST-5 combines the strength of a standard titanium alloy with the ductility of its low-oxygen version. These two grades currently account for about two-thirds of global titanium consumption in the medical industry.

The new VST-5 alloy was presented at the All-Russian conference "Prospects of Titanium Alloys in Medicine", which was held for the first time at the VSMPO-Avisma scientific and technical center. The work is being carried out with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation. The corporation also reported that buyers of domestic VST-5 will be able to claim profit tax benefits.
