Specialists from Kabardino-Balkarian State University named after H.M. Berbekov have developed a heterogeneous proton-conducting polymer composite intended for use in solid polymer fuel cells. The development can find application in hydrogen energy, electrolyzers, and other devices where membranes with high ionic conductivity are required.
The material consists of two components: a polymer base made of fluorine-containing polyethersulfone and a special ion-exchange filler (cation exchanger KU-1). The ratio of components is from 56 to 64% filler and from 36 to 44% polymer. This combination provides the composite with a high ability to pass protons (charged particles) and resistance to heating.
The authors note that the proposed method for obtaining the material is simple and economical. The development can be used in the creation of membranes for hydrogen fuel cells, which is especially relevant in the context of alternative energy development.
