The legendary Mikoyan Design Bureau, which created the MiG-21, MiG-29, MiG-31, and the newest MiG-35, may cease to exist as an independent design bureau in the coming years. The United Aircraft Corporation is implementing a project to create a Unified Engineering and Design Center, within which the teams of MiG and Sukhoi are to work in a single structure.
At the same time, UAC is coordinating the relocation of the Mikoyan Design Bureau's engineering center from Leningradsky Prospekt in Moscow. An area of almost 8 hectares is planned for the construction of a public-residential complex with a total area of about 260 thousand square meters. The PIK group is named as a possible developer of the project.
The issue has already reached the level of the State Duma. In June, CPRF deputies proposed requesting information from the government on the advisability of merging the two design schools and the possible consequences for the aviation industry. However, the initiative did not receive support.
"Pervy Tekhnichesky" in a major article analyzed why the production of MiG-35 was put on hold. Only six interceptor fighters were built, and there is no talk yet of a new MiG-41 project.
