The transition to chip cards and new devices has almost deprived fraudsters of the ability to copy data using traditional overlays. However, this does not mean that any terminal can be used without inspection: the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs advises paying attention to signs of unauthorized interference.
Damage to the casing, scratches, signs of opening, and parts that differ in color or look foreign should raise suspicion. Overlays on the keyboard and other elements that are not usually present on such devices are also considered suspicious.
It is better to refuse the operation if the card enters the receiver with difficulty. This may indicate damage or a foreign object inside. This does not necessarily mean classic skimming – any unusual details may indicate an attempt to interfere with the device's operation.
ATMs without a conventional card slot are better protected from the installation of physical readers. At the same time, the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs specifically stated that the presence of NFC should be taken into account, calling such devices less secure, but the reasons for this assessment were not specified by the department.
If in doubt, it is safer to cancel the operation, use another terminal, and report the suspicious device to the servicing bank.
