Reports that about 20% of passenger aircraft in Russia are allegedly idle have caused a wide resonance online. However, aviation expert, editor-in-chief of the Avia.ru portal, Roman Gusarov, urges not to draw hasty conclusions based on such calculations.

According to him, real air transportation statistics show a different picture: in 2025, the industry reached record passenger traffic figures, and the average airworthiness of aircraft is 96–98%.

If I sit by the window and count sparrows, and then draw a conclusion about the entire population - how adequate will that analysis be? The logic here is roughly the same.

Gusarov added that part of the fleet may indeed be in reserve or undergoing maintenance, but this is normal practice and is not measured in tens of percent.

Most technical work is carried out at night or during the off-season so as not to affect the flight schedule.
