In the USA, the experimental AK-444 assault rifle, based on the "Saiga" and chambered for the powerful .444 Marlin hunting cartridge, was tested. The tests were conducted by an American firearms reviewer, who called this development one of the most powerful variants of the Kalashnikov assault rifle he had ever worked with.
During the tests, the expert compared the AK-444 with a standard assault rifle chambered for 7.62×39 mm cartridges. According to him, the unusual modification significantly surpasses the classic version in terms of muzzle energy. While the standard cartridge develops about 2 thousand joules, the .444 Marlin provides more than 4 thousand joules, almost doubling the power.
The project was based on a civilian "Saiga" adapted for a large-caliber hunting round. Due to the large size of the cartridge, the magazine holds only ten rounds, but the reduced ammunition capacity is compensated by high stopping power.
During the tests, the shooter checked the weapon's performance against a massive steel target designed for much more powerful ammunition. Despite the absence of noticeable metal damage, the heavy structure swayed significantly more after being hit by the .444 Marlin than after shots from a standard AK.
The tester paid special attention to recoil. According to his assessment, the powerful cartridge significantly increases the load on the shooter. During firing, he noted that the rifle had a much stronger impact on the shoulder compared to a regular AK.
The AK-444 was developed by the American company Tromix as an experimental model. Despite high interest from enthusiasts of unusual weapons, the project never went into serial production and remains a rare prototype.
