Diesel-reduction gear unit M-473 instead of MAN: "Governor N.M. Baranov" and "Merchant D.V. Sirotkin" hydrofoils await remotorization

Two new Project 03580 "Meteor 120R" hydrofoil vessels built in Nizhny Novgorod

Shipbuilders of the R.E. Alekseev Central Design Bureau for Hydrofoil Vessels (TsKB for SPK) have built two new hydrofoil vessels, "Governor N.M. Baranov" and "Merchant D.V. Sirotkin" (Project 03580 "Meteor 120R"). They will be operated in the Nizhny Novgorod region. This was reported by the press service of the Russian Classification Society (RKO).

The Upper Volga branch of the Russian Classification Society has completed technical supervision of the construction of two high-speed passenger vessels.

Project 03580 "Meteor 120R" hydrofoils are the largest hydrofoil vessels in the river class. Cruising range is 600 km, autonomy is 8 hours.

"Meteor 120R" characteristics:

  • Length — 35.84 m
  • Width — 9.70 m
  • Height — 6.27 m
  • Draft — 2.35 m
  • Maximum speed — 65 km/h
  • Capacity — 120 people
  • Crew — 5 people

The vessels use 2 MAN D2862LE483 marine diesel engines as power plants. Due to Western sanctions, the R.E. Alekseev TsKB for SPK decided to find a domestic alternative.

PAO "Zvezda" modernized the M-473 diesel-reduction gear unit (DRA) specifically for the "Meteors". In 2025, it successfully passed bench tests. Serial production of these engines for the remotorization of high-speed vessels is planned.
