Workshops, where Toyota, Volkswagen, and other foreign brands' logos recently stood, are gradually being brought back to life in Russia – but with new cars, new owners, and new tasks. The head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Anton Alikhanov, spoke about the large-scale reboot of the automotive industry at SPIEF-2026.

According to him, Russia has already restarted more than 80% of the plants left by foreign companies and is now moving towards full utilization of all sites.

This is not just about preserving buildings and equipment. Along with the plants, it was possible to retain about 30 thousand jobs and a production base designed for approximately 1.6 million cars per year.

The domestic automotive industry survives in conditions of aggressive expansion of Asian brands solely due to a total reduction in the cost of finished cars, said AvtoVAZ head Maxim Sokolov.
