State Corporation "Rosatom" is bringing the "Proryv" (Breakthrough) project, which is intended to close the nuclear fuel cycle in practice, to the finish line. As the project's scientific director Evgeny Adamov told TASS at SPIEF-2026, its mission is to restore the possibility of large-scale development for nuclear energy over centuries, rather than remaining in a niche, and to prove the economic competitiveness of a closed cycle.
A key element of the project is the Experimental Demonstration Energy Complex (ODEC) in Seversk. Its heart is the BREST-OD-300 fast neutron reactor with a lead coolant, with a capacity of 300 MW. It can operate on mixed nitride uranium-plutonium fuel, which is produced right there, at the spent nuclear fuel reprocessing module. All of these are Generation IV technologies that Rosatom intends to bring to industrial implementation.
Closing the cycle significantly increases the fuel base of nuclear energy, involving uranium-238 in the process. The volume of radioactive waste is reduced. The "Proryv" project proves that nuclear energy can become not just low-carbon, but practically inexhaustible.
