500 kg more payload: Severstal upgraded wheel rims for tractors and trailers

New models made of Powerform 420 and S355MC steel reduce weight and increase wheel load

At the COMvex exhibition, Accuride Wheels Russia presented two new models of Kronprinz brand wheel rims made from Severstal's high-strength rolled steel, the company's press service told "Pervy Tekhnichesky".

The first novelty is the lightweight tubeless rim RZB15099OE 9.00×22.5 for semi-trailer tractors. It was made from high-strength cold-formed Powerform 420 steel. New design solutions and the use of this grade allowed reducing the rim's weight by 20%. This gives carriers the opportunity to reduce fuel consumption, increase payload per trip, and extend the service life of the chassis and tires. The rim was shown on a KamAZ-65659 K5 series semi-trailer tractor. The product is also widely used by bus manufacturers in Russia and the CIS.

The second model is the lightweight wheel rim RZB36606OE 22.5×11.75 with zero offset for trailer equipment. It was made from high-strength S355MC rolled steel. The new rim geometry and the steel's strength characteristics allowed reducing the rim's weight by an average of 8 kilograms compared to analogues and increasing the nominal wheel load by 10% — up to 5500 kilograms. The model was shown on the new four-axle NefAZ-95094 semi-trailer.

Serial production of the rims was organized at the Russian plant in Zainsk (Tatarstan). The use of Powerform 420 and S355MC steels in combination with an optimized design allowed reducing the wall thickness without losing strength. This reduced the weight of unsprung elements, decreased inertial losses and rolling resistance. As a result, carriers gain increased payload and reduced fuel consumption.
