Coming Soon: When 5G Network Will Be Launched in Russia

Operators will be allocated the 4.63-4.99 GHz frequency band

Russian authorities plan to allocate the 4.63–4.99 GHz frequency band to operators VimpelCom, MTS, MegaFon, and T2 by the end of June 2026 for deploying fifth-generation (5G) networks in major cities. This is confirmed by materials from the State Commission for Radio Frequencies (SCRF).

Telecommunications companies may also be allowed to use frequencies for 2G, 3G, and LTE networks. One important condition is the use of domestically produced equipment. However, the transition to proprietary technologies will be gradual.

Specifically, by the end of 2027, the share of Russian radio-electronic means in networks should be at least 1%, by 2030 — at least 50%. The full transition is planned for the end of 2031.

According to the SCRF draft decision, this year 5G will appear in 4 cities with a population of over 1 million people. In 2027 — in 16, by 2030 — in 40, by 2035 — in 84.

In tech-neutral mode, operators can launch fifth-generation networks within a few days after the SCRF decision and formal assignment by Roskomnadzor.

Subscribers will not yet feel the difference: speeds will be slightly faster, and latencies will be slightly reduced, the expert explained. Changes will become noticeable when networks are launched at 4.63–4.99 GHz. In this case, speeds will increase up to 10 times, he concluded.
