Russia's First Giant Crankshaft for D49 Engines Forged in the Urals

VSMPO-Avisma: The blank was produced on a unique 75,000-ton press

In the Urals, a large-sized steel crankshaft blank for D49 series diesel engines was produced for the first time. The work was carried out in Verkhnyaya Salda on a hydraulic press with a force of 75 thousand tons, the press service of VSMPO-Avisma corporation reported.

The single-pass hot bulk forging method was used for production. Previously, such technology was not used in Russia for parts of this size.

The crankshaft is considered one of the most complex and heavily loaded engine parts. It converts the reciprocating motion of the pistons into rotation and operates under constant shock and temperature loads.

This is a new market for the corporation, a new level of opportunities for domestic engine building.

D49 series engines are used in locomotives, ships, and power plants.

Previously, large-sized steel crankshaft blanks for high-power Russian diesel engines were purchased exclusively from abroad. Now the technology is fully localized in Russia.
