The strength of titanium parts for aviation in Russia has been increased 10-fold

The indicator will grow due to high-energy electromechanical processing of the material

Russian scientists have developed a new technology for increasing the wear resistance of titanium alloys through high-energy electromechanical processing (EMP) of the material. This was reported by Igor Zakharov, head of the Department of "Strength of Materials" at Volgograd Technical University (VolgGTU).

He recalled that improving the reliability of parts made of titanium alloys is important in the manufacture of engine components and load-bearing elements in the aviation and aerospace industries, as well as in the defense-industrial complex.

Our EMP-based development consists of the simultaneous impact of high temperatures and contact pressures on the material. In this way, we increased wear resistance by 10 times. If previously the critical wear value of a part was reached after 150,000 cycles, then after strengthening the part withstands more than 1,500,000 cycles.

Zakharov added that the technology is applicable for optimizing the strengthening of the surfaces of parts and assemblies of marine vessels.

Let us recall that the key titanium producer for the aviation industry is VSMPO-Avisma Corporation. In Sverdlovsk Region, a new modern automated complex for processing titanium products will be built in the near future.

VSMPO-Avisma also produces titanium semi-finished products for domestic PD-8 and PD-14 engines for the MS-21 and Superjet 100 aircraft.
