Sheremetyevo Airport begins testing biometric boarding: no passport or boarding pass required

The technology has been connected to state digital identification systems

Sheremetyevo has launched test operation of a biometric passenger identification system. In the future, the airport plans to transfer some pre-flight procedures to facial recognition – without presenting a passport or boarding pass.

According to the airport's press service, the infrastructure has already been connected to the test circuit of the state systems ESIA and the Unified Biometric System. The technology is currently undergoing a pilot operation phase.

After regulatory restrictions are lifted, passengers will be able to check in for flights, enter the "sterile" zone, and board the aircraft through special turnstiles with biometric scanning. The system will automatically confirm identity by face.

Biometric data can be submitted directly at the airport – the procedure, according to Sheremetyevo's estimates, will take about 10 minutes.

In fact, the airport is preparing for a scenario where simply looking into a camera will be enough to board a flight.
