No room for error: Kalinin NPP begins scheduled repairs of the fourth power unit

15,000 maintenance and modernization works will be performed on the VVER-1000 reactor equipment

Scheduled repairs of the fourth power unit with a VVER-1000 reactor will begin at the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant on May 9, 2026. The work will be organized by enterprise specialists together with employees of JSC Atomenergoremont. The program includes almost 15,000 operations – from fuel reloading to modernization of safety systems.

The shutdown of the power unit will be the first stage of the repair campaign, which this year will affect three of the station's four units. During the work, specialists will carry out preventive maintenance of the reactor and turbogenerator units, check the metal condition of the main equipment, and diagnose eight and a half thousand heat exchange tubes in two steam generators.

Special attention is paid to infrastructure renewal. On the fourth unit, the emergency primary circuit cooling system, the reliable power supply scheme, and the automatic water fire extinguishing system will be modernized. These changes will increase the station's resilience to external and internal risk factors.

Upon completion of the work, the fourth power unit will return to operation with updated systems and confirmed service life of the main components. Approximately 2,000 people will be involved in the repair campaign.

Earlier, "Perviy Tekhnicheskiy" reported that scheduled major repairs with modernization were completed ahead of schedule on the second power unit of the Smolensk NPP. Rosatom specialists and station engineers restored the service life of 156 technological channel cells.
