The area of responsibility of the smallest regional center of the Unified Air Traffic Management System (ES OrVD) in Russia is comparable to the size of France or Spain, said Dmitry Savitsky, Deputy General Director of the Almaz-Antey Air and Space Defence Corporation.
Regional centers control territories of different sizes. The smallest area of responsibility belongs to the Samara center – 600 thousand square kilometers. The largest coverage is at the Magadan center, which is responsible for the airspace over the northeast of Russia and part of the Arctic Ocean. The area of its control zone is 5.8 million square kilometers. The difference in zone sizes is explained by the country's geographical features and the uneven distribution of air routes.
The entire system is built on the basis of hardware and software complexes developed by Almaz-Antey. The equipment processes radar and satellite monitoring data, synchronizes the work of dispatchers and crews, and regulates the intensity of flows at flight levels. The update of technical means is carried out in stages, with priority given to Arctic and transcontinental corridors.
