PD-8 Engine Overcomes Thrust Issue and Reaches Certification Finish Line

ODK: Icing tests confirm the stability of the power plant

The United Engine Corporation is completing the certification of the new PD-8 aircraft engine for short-haul aircraft. The main set of tests has already been completed, including tests in icing conditions and flight tests on the "Superjet" in the Arkhangelsk region, ODK said.

Bench tests were conducted at TsIAM for three months, simulating real flight conditions. Specialists simulated the formation of ice on the spinner, fan blades, and compressor, and then checked the engine's stability and controllability when ice entered.

Fedor Mironov, Deputy Director for Sales at ODK, emphasized that despite the harsh operating conditions in the form of ice accretion, the engine continued to operate normally and did not lose thrust.

Tests in low-temperature conditions once again demonstrate the correctness of all design solutions and are among the final activities for the certification of the latest PD-8 engine.

In December 2025, a source at Business Online in the aviation industry stated that the PD-8 was not producing the necessary thrust for flights with a full cabin. This problem seems to have been resolved. Recall that the PD-8's thrust at maximum takeoff mode is 8,056 kgf.

Official certification of the PD-8 is scheduled for April 2026, Rosaviatsiya noted. Earlier, Rostec showed unique footage of the production of PD-8 parts for the SJ-100 aircraft.
